Our friends David and Sarah have done wonders to restore this beautiful working cattle farm about an hour northwest of Melbourne. It began as a potato farm and also served as a sheep and cattle farm. The main homestead was built around 1890 and additions have expanded the size of the house making it perfect for hosting guests. Everything has been beautifully updated, and the main window looks out to Mt. Macedon. We stayed in the renovated Shearing Shed...a cozy guest house which is steps away from a pond and The Pub...formerly housing for shearers and workers on the potato farm. During Covid, this provided a safe venue for them to see friends and family. Sarah and David are very generous and bent over backwards to welcome us. We even enjoyed an evening at the local pub, The Pig & Whistle. Jack had his first practice drive on the left side of the road, and we found a local bakery which carried Bakewell tarts! (Shout out to the Boland family....Marg's great-grandmother was a Bakewell!)
Anyone wishing to visit this part of the world should definitely check out their latest project. Soon to be launched as an Air B&B, Soma is a home being renovated by their friend Mila in the town of Trentham. Mila oversaw the transformation of the Shearing Shed and The Pub, and her talent and creativity rivals the work of Fixer Upper and Hometown, two popular US home shows. She loves re-purposing items and shops in second-hand shops for bargains. The result: beautiful, lasting creations and less landfill.
How absolutely beautiful! We love hearing about your travels and the photos too, thank you!
